I am absolutely horrified to say that yesterday while my four six week old cochins and I were out during playtime, the runt Sammy darted under my foot as I was stepping down. There was nothing I could do to stop,. She screamed and ran under the toolshed. I got her out and I seriously thought that she was dying, she acted shocky and floppy. I had seen her move all of her appendages so Iknew her back and neclk were not broken. But my heart was. I cried and called my husband. He said to put her back with her siblings and let her rest that there was nothing I could do now but let nature work itself out or some such. No can do. I could not let her die by herself. I put her in a fuzzy blankey and held her to me. I kid you not she was almost lifeless, Well within an hour she was up and moving and a little slow and sore, but very much alive,I thanked God and my chickys guardian angel. Today I have been watching her closely, and she is eating fine pooping ok and flappping wings,. She was a little scared of me for part of the day ( can you blame her) But by night time she was definitley coming around. I am so mad at myself for allowing this to happen to her. I have taken to shuffling my feet when the babies are around them instead of picking them up and moving a lot slower. Poor baby, I would have never forgivven myself if she would have died from my carelessness.,

You poor thing!

I am so sorry that that happened to you! I am very glad that it had a happy outcome.

Just a few weeks back, as I was leaving the coop, I closed the door on one of my chicks!!!! In my case, the little chick did die. :(

Thank you Alaskan for your kindness and I am sooo sorry about your little one. They move so fast sometimes that its hard to foresee things. The books I read always say expect to lose at least one out of your flock, but even losing one would be heartbreaking. They become like your kids. you watch all their little fuzzy accomplishments and are so proud of them when they do something big. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you and good luck with the rest of your babies. And try to stay warm Im in Washington and cold, I can't even imagine what Alaska would be like. BBRRRRR.:)

I'm so glad your baby is OK! Thank God! Don't beat yourself up! It was a accident. And your baby is alright! That's the best news! Just enjoy watching her grow up! I'm so glad to hear everything is alright!

Thank you Realsis for your encouragement. I am trying really hard to make it up to her, Sammy is now afraid of me and a little standoffish, but I pick her up several times a day and spoil her with meal worms. I am so glad shes ok.

oh man me to on glad your baby is OK! Shooooo that was scary! I stepped on mines feet before so now they know to move. But like you I do that as well basically drag my feet when they're all around me so I don't step on one. My niece stepped on one of hers and killed it. :( Hers are older than mine are.
Just so happy yours is ok!

Thank you all for your care and support. Sammy is doing fine now. Thank god. I wouldn't have been able to stand to lose her. They are all so precious and even at that young age they have such sweet personalities. I will post pictures later. I am on dial up internet right now but am getting Hughesnet at the first of the month so will be able to upload pics then. Get ready....:D
