I sure wasn't expecting this. *UPDATE*

We were shocked. However, if you told us that one of them would grow up and go broody we would have guessed her. Can't explain why. My husband says the same thing. Ever since she started laying we had these unrealistic hopes about her. Maybe that's the key..unrealistic hope. She has always been our favorite, too.
I'll keep you posted!

ohhhh!!! congrats!!!!!!! she's very pretty, i hope she follows through! i wish the unrealistic hope worked on my girly pekin, she hasn't sat yet. =[ her boy is getting pretty protective of the eggies though, i'm praying he decides to sit on them!! haha.

Dang you! You jinxed me. I showed your pics to my DBF and explained that it was surprising because generally Khaki's DON'T go broody. Now, for the past few days my Khaki has been building a nest and trying to keep her egg (and her friend's) under her until I shoo them out of the nest. Once I take the eggs though she goes about her day. I don't have a male, and darn it I almost picked one up at the feed store that someone was abandoning last week.

Murphy's Law strikes again, huh?

Look what we woke up to Easter morning!!Check out those adorable black leggings!

I got up bright and early to find this adorable little guy. He was already all fluffy and perfect. The kids got to wake up with a "happy Easter" and a duckling in their face. It was awesome.
Our little Khaki sat for one more day and then she was done. By the time we noticed, the eggs were ice cold. I was ready to toss them until I felt movement in some of them. I freaked out and brought them inside. I put warm damp cloths all around them with a heat lamp above. I made sure there was ventilation and then I waited for my husband to get home from work. Up to that point I really didn't know anything about incubation.
After much discussion and reading up my husband decided to make a make-shift incubator. He's in the heating business so luckily we had a couple things on hand. He grabbed a thermomoter and a humidity gage from the shop next door. He put some damp towels and sponges in a tupperware tub. He put a dry washcloth on a plate to set the eggs on. He made sure that it was ventilated and that the humidity and temp were alright. ..and we waited.

Long story short, we really didn't expect anything but look what happened this morning!!! There's movement in the other two and a pip in the third!!

AWESOME!!!

It is amazing she hatched out any! Glad you were able to rescue the others. They are khaki mixed with what else? Those two-tone feet are adorable!

Actually, I think they are Silver Appleyard x Pekin. They could be Khaki Campbell x pekin, but they lay in the same area and the Appleyard was the one who got the most action. My little khaki was so much smaller than the Pekin that he rarely caught her and if he did, with their size difference I'm not sure about fertility. Since they all have such similar coloring, I think the safe bet is the Appleyard.
We got the best of both worlds with natural and artifical incubation. It's just unreal. We feel very lucy. We learned so much. ...and on Easter! Awesome!
