Hi, my name is Beth, and I have a bird problem..
It started with a housewarming gift to myself of 2 baby ducks and 2 baby chicks—minus a chick turned roo, plus 3 new pullets, minus 2 hens to untimely demises, plus 2 new ducklings to balance the drake/hen ratio, plus 6 chicks for a meat flock turned laying flock (that relieves my two overworked hens)...And I just made a back room deal for fertile eggs to slip under my broody, and am actually considering the breeder’s offer for Svart Hona eggs..it’s time to face facts.
I’m a bird hoarder.
To answer the boiler plate questions:
(1) Are you new to birds / when did you first get birds?
First dabbled in ducks as a teenager when I got ducklings for Easter and raised them to a happy pair of adult drakes. This is my 4th go-round with raising birds.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
13 - 4 ducks, 9 chix, and three eggs in the nest (not counted because they haven’t hatched).
(3) What breeds do you have?
Hens-RIW, cream leghorn, gold comet, black star, welsummer, speckled Sussex, and a lavender/buff EE.
Roo-Australorp
Ducks-2x Cayuga (nesting pair), 1 Rouen hen, and 1 silver Appleyard (I think) drake.
I have a very pretty and varied flock.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I thought it’d be the eggs, but I seriously watch them more than TV now. They’re hilarious, beautiful and endlessly entertaining.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Oh jeez. This post is already a mile long. Let’s keep it to birds for now.

Been lurking here for tips and guidance and coop plans since last year. Finally stuck my toe in the water on a duck community question.
