I think i have a broody?

I would move her with her nest box but she isnt in one. She decided to go broody in a corner of the coop. Now, normally i wouldnt care where she did this but it is under the roosts! She is going to be pooped on all night long!

And I had planned on mucking out the coop on Saturday, since it was going to be nice out, but i havent had the chance yet and like i said....poop. Isnt this unsanitary?

uhhhh I really wanted a broody but now i am a nervous wreak! Someone just fly out here and hold my hand please.....

Am I confused? Didn't the OP want a broody? I didn't think she wanted to break her broody. sounds like she just wants to know if she can move her broody and put eggs under her, if her eggs could be fertile. (Or get some fertile eggs.

)

On the other hand, joanc has a broody who is sitting on fake eggs for two weeks. sounds like she should break her broody with a broody jail setup.

I do have one of those child octo-gate thingy's that is suppose to keep my kids penned up...would that work inside the coop so i dont have to move her? Maybe put a piece of plywood on top so there is no poo dropping on her and quickly replace the bedding when putting the eggs under her so that it would be poo free and new?

Melissa, that sounds like a good plan. Try to do much of it after dark, when she's less aware of what's going on around her. I wish you & your hen great success!

Thank you guys sooooo much for all your advise! I am so excited to see if she actually wants to stay put for a while! I am on day 18 with a some eggs so i will be really excited if she will hatch out some of the BLRW!!!!!

Hi,

I have a 7 month old BO that is broody for the first time and we gave her some fertile eggs. We have her in a pen all by herself and she seems content to sit on the eggs. She does eat and drink, but much more rarely than usual. But she does seem okay and we're hoping she'll stick with it. She has been like this for a couple of weeks, so I think so. Good luck with your broody!

Sometimes a broody just will not be moved. I have tried in the middle of incubation and it didn't work. I've done it as the chicks were just starting to pip and that seemed to cement the hen to the new area better. It's probably best to try to move them the moment they go broody so if it's going to break her up, at least she has no eggs to ruin. Whatever you do, sure hope you have a great hatch!
