Don't you blame yourself for one minute! She was probably in pure agony and there wasn't much you could do for her. You saw that she was suffering and took care of it. At least she's not suffering anymore.

I've read a number of posts here about maggot infestations. I'm sure a few of the birds have pulled through, but a lot of them had a long, hard road to death. Don't beat yourself up. You made the hard decision. You did the difficult duty. Your heart is big enough to take it all in and deal with it. Don't second guess yourself just because it feels bad now. Taking a life never feels good, even when it is.

I agree with all of this. One of the responsibilities of keeping animals is showing mercy. It was obvious that the bird was suffering, and you did the right thing with what you knew at the time.

Please don't allow this situation to cause you to avoid showing mercy to other suffering animals in the future. Unfortunately, chickens are delicate creatures, and it is not unusual to have to cull one once in a while for various reasons.

Take a deep breath...relax... You'll be okay.

This is well said - you also should feel good about loving your animal more than your own comfort.

Fly strike of a wound is ugly..I experienced the same with my first rooster -who I loved -
this was several years ago - and having that experience allowed me (gave me the strength) to save the life of one of my llamas this summer-with a much larger wound. God Bless you.
