I was out in the garden tending to the veggies. I found two small zucchinis that had fallen off of the plant. they were about two inches long and looked like the stem had been injured and it had begun to die. I scooped them up and added them to the rest of the treats I was giving to the chickens. My rooster was in "jail" so I divided up the treats and gave some to the hens and some to the roosters. about an hour later, my rooster was dead. He had been acting completely normal. There were no signs of illness. There was also no sign of injury or struggle. everyone else was fine. The only difference was that he ate most of the zucchini, the other rooster had some, and the girls had none. Could he have been poisoned by the zucchini because it was going bad?? I feel horrible!

Hmm, never heard that it was bad for them. My chickens love it and it has never been fatal to my girls and boys. Sorry for your loss

How big were the pieces? Could he have chocked on it? I have feed mine zucchini and yellow squash several times, but I make sure it is in bite size pieces or in very large chunks. I haven't had a problem with it. Even with pieces that had a little rotten place on it.

One was about 2 inches long and the other one slightly smaller. I did not cut it up, I just tossed them in whole. He was pecking the heck out of it when I left him...maybe he did choke...I feel so bad... I just can't understand why he would just drop dead. He was completely normal down to complaining about being locked up a little under an hour from when I found him. I just don't get it...
