It might not be your eyes playing tricks... sometimes they shake before they start to pip (or peep)... at least mine did. (this is my first hatch, so I'm no expert!)
And if you have a thick foam bator with a fan, the in-egg peeps can be a bit hard to hear. but once they bust out of the egg -- BOY are they loud! My first hatchling woke me up at 4 a.m. on Christmas Day.
