I think I may have too may Roo’s

Started removing the boys. I was hoping to get them to 10 weeks before butchering, so they are in another cage for now. I have identified 5 Roos from crowing. None of the white ones have made a sound. I’m hoping they are girls.

So, as it turns out... all 12 are Roos. Not a single girl in the bunch. On to the recipe post and planning to get more. Maybe older chicks at a poultry show in may.

That stinks, sometimes the odds are way off and you end up with way too many boys. Since there aren't any girls to fight over you might be able to keep them around a bit longer to fatten them up before butchering them.

i like your pen setup! is that a dog crate? what are the dimensions?

Yes, it’s an XL dog crate I purchased for my greyhound. He no longer uses the crate, so it’s been stored for ages. I thought it would make a nice quail cage. I am hoping to transition them to an outdoor cage when the weather gets better. This will be where I keep them in the winter.

I will measure it tomorrow.

I think I have a similar size dog crate, never thought about using it as a quail cage! The plastic around the bottom is a great idea.
