I think I may need to cull one of my girls.

I am immensely sorry about your poor hen. That she had to endure the horror of a dog attack, and that she didn't get to win her battle. Sounds like she might've needed more intensive veterinary attention, though that doesn't necessarily mean her injuries were fixable.

Do you know whose dogs these were?

I've been on a parallel track. My sweet little hen Ellie was viciously attacked by 2 dogs that came in the yard yesterday. Her wounds were/are severe. I almost lost her to shock in the first couple of hours - in my lap her head dropped and her eyes closed - but I held her and held her and spoke to her, comforting her. Finally she calmed. Then I examined her closely and could see it was bad - not just a case for cleansing and neosporin. She's in the hospital and had surgery yesterday. I am anxiously waiting for it to be 9 a.m, when the vet said to call to see how she's doing - praying she made it through. She has a lot of healing to do. The dogs were put in the hands of animal control and their people notified. I got a call from them last night, with an apology (tho I've told them before how crucial it is that their dogs not get loose). I will be giiving them the bills (hopefully they will pay), with photos of her wounds, and her dog on my deck. First time I've ever been able to ID the dog owners and I know that for the sake of all of our feathered friends, we must make the dog owners feel the financial ramifications. The dog attacks reported on BYC alone are staggering in number. And staggering in the pain and suffering they cause. When I look at the pile of feathers where the pit bull one had her cornered and was tearing at her, I am so angry thinking of what that was like for her. We must make very public that dog attacks are unacceptable. Dogs are predators and it is the solemn responsibility of their guardians to ensure they do not harm another.

Again, I'm so sorry.

Sorry for your loss. I've been there as probably almost all on this board. I hope the owners do paid the vet bills. Free ranging chickens is ideal but it seems to shorten the life expectancy greatly.
