Hello I need advise. I’ve been building my flock and planned to sell hatching eggs, chicks and grown chickens. I think I may have MG in one of my flocks (thankfully separate from my other flock). Do I just cull the possibly affected ones now, before the other get sick? Or is it not that big of a deal, and most flocks have it so it’s not a big deal. I could never sell livestock without disclosing all the info, but maybe in chicken-world it’s just not a problem. I’ve never seen anything on web sites saying “clean-flock” or whatever, so maybe it’s just a risk you take??
Please share advice!!!

Oh no. Culling makes me so sad. You won’t be able to sell their eggs because they will carry it for life but you can minimize it to the minimum with prescriptions for vets like Tylosin or tetracyclines. I think it’s not that big of a deal if you have other flocks or another flock. You can keep them as pets and eat their eggs when cleaned. I say keep them, but that’s just me.

Unfortunatly with little kids I don’t know how long I will be able to keep the clean flock from being infected. And I couldn’t, in good conscious, continue my poultry business if I have MG or MS in my flocks. If it was to end up in both, I would have to cull everything. That’s 100 over 100 birds.

I understand , what do you think you’ll do?

I don’t know. This is such a nightmare! I’ve thought about just seeing if anyone who already has MG in their flock wanted them just to get the out of here. But how likely is it that someone will want them too? And quickly.

I had to cull everything last year because I brought in chicks with MG and it spread to everyone when i penned them next to my healthy birds. It was my first experience with MG and I didnt know the signs until it was too late.

I had to cull every bird I had because I sell eggs and chicks.

If they have not exposed your other birds, i would cull asap and watch your other birds for a couple of weeks for symptoms.
