One of my hens has been sick for almost 2 weeks now. I have treated her for cocci and that cleared up her poop, but its now a week after that and shes getting worse. She shows no signs of any other distress other than she is not moving around, barely walking. She is barely eating and drinking unless I almost force it. Her comb is almost colorless and flopped over. I cant afford to buy various medications to treat her for everything under the sun and I think its time. This post is me feeling bad knowing what the decision should be.

Well today is the day, she can hardly stand and it must be done. I put her under a bush in the shade so she can have some time outside before husband gets home to do it. It makes me want to cry. I have lost 3 others, and we put 12 in the freezer but actually having to do the deed is just sad.

I have been in a similar difficult situation. I had a hen that got infested with maggots during the summer, unfortunately I noticed too late and had to leave her in a box next to the woods over night. I couldn't bring myself to kill her and she was too weak to walk.

Had to let nature take its course.

Thanks guys. Im still waiting for him to get home, she hobbled her way half way across the yard and is sitting under a wheelbarrow. I dont want to fuss with her much, I have been poking and prodding her for 2 weeks now, I figure she can do what she wants till later. . I have such mixed feelings about killing an animal, its not like we will eat her which usually helps that thought but she has zero quality of life at this point.

oh my gosh!!! i hate that for you and wish i could help you! i love my chickens to death and its hard i have been fortunate not to loose one yet but one is on the edge right now! dose she have a name?
