I don't know your area so the first thing I would recommend is that you make sure it is ok to have them there. Get yourself a book about chickens, and if you know of someone nearby that has chickens, talk to them. Then like Cadeschicks said, it would make life a lot easier to have the coop ready before you get the chickens. Also, be aware of any animals and pets that come into your yard that may pose a threat to chickens, and take care of that ahead of time.

! I think you're going to be just fine. Chickens are very adaptable critters and do well in makeshift coops as well as the Taj Mahal of coops. Just follow some of the great advice already posted above and in no time you'll have a fine set up. Best of luck to you!!

I would suggest you have some kind of coop and run before you get your chickens. It doesn't have to be fancy or elaborate, the chickens don't care.
I'm all for using what you have on hand, reuse, re-purpose. I built mine out of scrap wood and pallets.












Enjoy having your own chickens. They are good therapy and give you eggs!

I've made some changes since I first built this enclosure, and this old lady did all the work herself, so if I can do it then anyone can.

if you have someone at home to build it, me well I had to hire someone, and the cost.. Well let's just say I wish it was off Craigslist and for that cheap. I could not find a coop any where here in Montana, and the pre built ones were either way to expensive or cheaply made. My first coop, 1,000 dollars. All toll over the last year. My first coop was nice but fit only 5 birds, my run cost me 550.00 for a 10x10x10 dog kennel. Winter sucked, snow and ice on the top of the tarps covering my pen, to small a coop,total cost the first year 1,550 dollars . spring came, add onto the coop and had a pen built cost 1,700 dollars. Now my coop holds 12/15 chickens and pen is wonderful, but the cost wow
