Hay now,
I typed in owning a blue heeler and wanting to raise chickens...thought I'd join backyardchickens to start my chicken journey here.
I read one poster whom I forgot the name but it began to sound like if I train my dog to not hurt the chickens I could freely range them...yes, she is like velcro to me. However, she has taken up running the fence line and barking at neighbors passing by due to my boxer showing her how. Both dogs are 7 yrs old. She loves to run and bark so I'm feeling much trepidation around getting chicks and naturally my boxer follows HER lead when it comes to chasing rabbits, cats etc. I live on 5 acres and REALLY want chickens. I can build a fenced in area and I read here how to introduce the chicks...any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Most dogs see chickens as dinner unfortunately. No matter how sweet your dog is to you or other dogs, chances are he will still hurt your birds. So it is best to keep the dog locked up when the birds are outside or keep the birds in a run at all times.

Great to have you and welcome to our flock!

It would be a good idea to put a cover on your run. It's pretty common for birds to fly the coop only to end up with a dog's jaws around them. To date no chicken has ever killed a dog unless one choked to death eating chicken bones.

"]Welcome! :welcome I'm glad you joined our BYC "flock"!

I hope you are happy to be around here it is very helpful
