I had to vent somewhere about this because it is just, in my opinion, very unjust and just plain wrong. There are plans to tear down the old bridge next to my property and the county has come up with proposals to where the new bridge they need to build is going to go. And 2 out of three destroy my community and take my family's land. This land has been in our family for over 300 years and they've imminent domained part of it before in 1952 when they put in the first highway 64 and the old ferry dock next to my house which isn't even useful anymore because the water is too shallow and the little bit of dock left is dry rotted and falling apart. Now they're trying to take the rest of it. We've been trying to start up our own small farm here and I've been happy. But one of the proposals goes right over my house!!!! And this is just so darn upsetting it's ridiculous. To top it all off I've been being harassed and have felt threatened on my own private property by some ignorant DOT employees. I have been documenting every time they come onto my property now, and even have a picture of them trespassing and brandishing a big knife. They're lucky I didn't have my gun on me or I would've told them to drop the knife and leave, but I had left my guns in the house and didn't even know they were there. I just don't know what to do. I feel sooo angry and upset and I just don't understand what the heck I ever did to anybody for this to happen. I mean I've just been so angry that even now it's hard for me to not start crying. Here's a picture of the map with the proposals on it that look like they're just going to destroy my house and try to give us 'fair market value' which isn't much more than the taxes on the property and definatly not enough for us to even get another house with less than an acre in this state.
The Yellow and red lines go right through my property. Actually the yellow line goes right over my house! Our property is the majority of the wedge between the two roads you see.

I guess all I'm asking is for good vibes and prayers from this awesome community that I'm proud to be a part of.
Sorry this was so long, I just had to get it off my chest...

There is a similar situation going on in my state & the family has been able to drag it out for years & years. You need an attorney, my dear. If you are unwilling to sell they may try to force you to do so. Do not accept any $$$ from the county/DOT without legal counsel.

Good luck!

I agree - get an attorney and whatever you do - do not talk to DOT without counsel. Unfortunately they can force you out and make you accept much much less than their initial offer will be. Or.....they will build all the way around you, leaving you residing in a house with super highways and thoroughfares surrounding you.

contact a lawyer immediately and go from there. If you and your neighbors can provide alternative routes and means to what they want to do, you may be able to avoid having this done.

I'm so sorry this is happening to you.

WHOA! I'm hoping that this will resolve itself before you have to take legal action. Maybe get the newspaper or media involved and have other folks in the area sign a petition.

If you fight this, they will have to either give in or pay you a huge sum of money.

Thank you all for your thoughts and responses

We're going to fight this as much as we possibly can. We're trying to start a petition here because it doesn't just take our property, but most of the community of East Lake. Yea we're a small community, we don't even have our own fire department or post office and we share a zip code with Manns Harbor. We still have the right to live on the properties that our families have owned for hundreds of years. I mean the proposals even take out cemeteries! If we have to, we'll get a lawyer. But we're stretched pretty thin financially already..

I'm feeling my anxiety levels rise just reading what you're going through!

While our case is nowhere near the devestation your plans could bring... I know a fraction of what you could be feeling. When we bought our place we weren't told anything about a "right of way" that ran through the side of our property... it was all grown over and you couldn't see it. Then someone came through one day while we were gone and bulldozed a 12 foot wide road through our trees to get back to some land locked property behind us. When we got home we were overcome with shock and horror to see what had happened. After a ton of fighting it turns out our closing people failed to show us that little tidbit. We could take it to court but in the end it wouldn't matter. Plus we don't have the money to worry with it. The road was cut so the property behind us could auction their timber and so the thick wooded area behind our property is about to get leveled.

Again - it isn't the same as what you're going through but I feel your frustrations, anger and hope you come out on top of this nightmare!

A local business was in the same spot you were. Not only did the DOT mess up the roads in front of their location, the city nearby decided to annex them and then change zoning... effectively making their business worthless.

They got an attorney who was able to find that due to their proximity to some railroad tracks, they were ineligible for annexation. Not sure how that worked out exactly, but that attorney earned his keep in no time

Get thee a lawyer.
