I think my chickens killed my dog.

Veternary treatment is not a luxury. It is a responsibility we make to our animals when we agree to keep them as pets. Ask the humane society why they remove sick animals from homes for lack of treatment. It is because this. Anyone who cannot afford to treat a sick animal is welcome to release ownership to a humane society for proper treatment or even contact a vet and say your have no money and maybe you can make payments or something.

I, again, am deeply sorry for your loss and maybe there was nothing you could've do but I hope my post will help others realize there are ALWAYS options and it is our duty as owners of our animals to give them the best chance at a healthy life.

I thought it was great that the OP was getting veterinary assistance over the phone. I'm sure if the vet thought it was necessary to bring the dog in he would have asked that.

Well, we all learn from our experiences, whether we've made bad choices or not. All I know is if I ever catch any of my dogs eating chickens again, they will go the the vet for x-rays.

The weight loss sounds like cancer to me. We had a Bordeaux Mastiff female, about 10 years old. She had a breast cancer. But, if we had it to do over again, we would not have had her have surgery. She was fine, appeared healthy, in fact she just had a small lump in a lower breast. Once she was "opened up" the cancer quickly spread to her jaw and neck. Within three weeks we had to have her put down. She let us know she was "done" being here. The vet said we could remove her lower jaw. But... we were not willing to do that, it was just too awful to think of having to keep removing parts as the cancer progressed. She had lived a good and long life for her breed.

From what I have come to understand, many slow growing cancers are better off left alone. Because once the body is trying to recover from the wound of surgery, the cancer cells that are in the wild have opportunity to take "root" in oher areas since the immune system is now compromised.

My guess the build up of all the feathers and bones from that many chickens.

We all can learn from these posts. Thanks for all the info, may
save many dogs.

Even knowing you would get judged.
