I think my chickens killed my dog.

Ya know, everyone's entitled to an opinion, but some of you folks sure are judgmental. Times have been pretty hard for a lot of people right now, and if during the past couple of months my dogs had gotten sick, I am not sure I'd have been able to cough up the money to pay for a bunch of treatment.

I am sorry about your cur dog. We just sold all our cur dogs (my hubby's hog hunting dogs) and I miss them terribly.

Have known of dogs who died after ingesting feathers (got into bucket of dove wings), and some who didn't die after eating whole birds. Not really any way to know for sure if eating the chickens is what killed him. Again, sorry about your dog loss........

Yeah thanks for all the judge mental replys as well as the more favorable ones. I've got a personal, close friend who is a vet. He met Chopper the week we got him 10 yrs. ago. He walked me through this whole mess on the phone. Telling him everything I've stated here, I was right, only in a vet's opinion, eating the WHOLE chicken killed him. My friend only recommended putting Chopper down if he was suffering and thought he should die at home with dignity just like he did. I was just missing him when I posted this and was curious of other's thoughts. Not be be attacked like I neglect my animals. I would say herbivore carcasses are fine, but I would personally, from experience skin any birds. Just as a precaution.

I understand your loss and my sympathies.
What disturbs me is you spoke on the phone to your vet all throught this ordeal..... rather than actually take the dog to your vet for at least a check up? That is sad for everyone all around now. :<(
You obviously took care of him for 11 years. Why at the end not? I am not being critical, just looking for some understanding of your delima. :<)

Kurk Told me he didn't need to see him.. Told him what happened and what was going on and didn't want to see him. He said as long as he was drinking water and acting happy to just let him go..

Sorry for the loss Maknat.

I will apologize for the rude and uncalled for posts on this thread. BYC members are normally better than this. Wish I caught it sooner or some one hit the report button along the way.

To those that posted here in an uncalled for fashion consider this a warning.

Sometimes good ole country home doctoring is better.
Besides, not all of us were born with a silver spoon or have money to throw away on luxuries like taking an ANIMAL to the vet. Sometimes its a choice between feeding a family or taking an ANIMAL to the vet. We all love our pets, but they are NOT people and should not be placed on the same level.
Ok, I'm ready, throw your rocks.

If you are fortunate to have a close relationship with a vet, a lot of doctoring CAN be done over the phone. The doc knows you well enough to know what kind of questions to ask and that he can trust that the answers are accurate.

Hugs from me.....and from Gunnar, a sneaky tongue-up-the-nose kiss

Veternary treatment is not a luxury. It is a responsibility we make to our animals when we agree to keep them as pets. Ask the humane society why they remove sick animals from homes for lack of treatment. It is because this. Anyone who cannot afford to treat a sick animal is welcome to release ownership to a humane society for proper treatment or even contact a vet and say your have no money and maybe you can make payments or something.

I, again, am deeply sorry for your loss and maybe there was nothing you could've do but I hope my post will help others realize there are ALWAYS options and it is our duty as owners of our animals to give them the best chance at a healthy life.
