A few days ago I was about 20 minutes late opening the coop. I heard some ruckus coming from it. I walked up and look through and my cockeral is attacking my fave Barred rock. I mean blood and everything. She has a huge wound on her neck and her comb is a little messed up. I clean her up and now she is acting quite strange. She was at the top of the pecking order and now she avoids her sisters and her attacker. Im sure she is traumatized but she really needs to stay under the protection of the flock. We have 3 HUGE hawks that circle our property. We have about an acre with lots of cover but still. I went out yesterday and didnt see her. So I gave her a call and she answers back (which she has always done with me) she sees me and makes a beeline to me and doesnt leave my side. Everynight when everyone else is already in the coop she waits by the backdoor. I have to go out and walk to the coop. She follows me and then goes inside. My rooster is still very inexperienced and quite rough with the girls. Pulls out feathers and everything. My guess is he tried to have his way with her and maybe drew blood and you know what happens next. As for her after behavior... Is this ok? Will she ever be the same?

you may have to cull him and find an older more docile rooster some roos only get more aggressive with age and may turn on you. she may be afraid of the roo and may not ever be the same with him there

I was thinking that too. He is scared @$!#less of me. You dont think as he "practices" he will get better. It doesnt help that some of the hens havent laid their first eggs yet and scream when he grabs them.

ok well they are really to young to be in with a roo anyway i always wait until they start laying regular before putting them in with a roo i dont want to tramatize the poor girls and if you only want eggs to eat you dont need a roo anyway

The cockeral and pullets are all the same age. The girls just arent all ready for his advances so when he tries something they scream and try to get away. I need a roo for an alert and he does a good job in that aspect. Is there anything I xan try to reestablish her into the flock without deleting my cockeral? If push comes to shove Ill eat him but I would want to replace him.

id get rid of him for a while and let them start laying then get a more experienced rooster later if your worried about hawks and such build a run to put the hens in until they are older and you get a new rooster or keep the rooster separated till they are older

I couldnt imagine putting up a run. They loooove the great white open. I think your right though. Getting rid of the roo does seem like it would help with my hen. Do you think if I confine my girls to the coop for a week my hen would find a place within the pecking order. I can only hope to her original top dog position.

that might work but as far as the run on the coop goes its all about the safety of the chickens i have all of my chickens in coops with runs on them we have too many predators here to let them free range i wish i could for some of them but to guarantee pure breds i have to keep some of the pens closed at all times
