I have 3 chicks that are 3 weeks old. Two of them walk more horizontally and one of them.. my production red holds it's self much higher when walking.. really tall.... it's a huge difference. I don't have any good pics but it was really clear to me the difference when I took them outside for the first time today.

If it's a he.. do I try and give him to a new home? I can't keep a rooster..

Shame because I really wanted 3 hens.. Now I'd have to look for a new chick and this one was my fav chick. I named "her" Loretta!

I hope I am wrong..

My RIR stands the same way. However, everyone seems to think she is a pullet.

. Since your bird looks exactly like mine, I'm saying she's a pullet.

I am new at this chicken thing, and we have made many "educated guesses" about ours as they are all straight run....however we have several different breeds and their ages vary by a few days but are all around 3 weeks old as well. We our praying that our favorites are girls as well....but I am NOT ready, until the bitter end to declare either way who is a pullet and who is a cockeral! From all the reading and research I have done, I don't think even the most educated chicken person on the planet could tell you one way or the other at this point!!! Having watched our chicks grow and develop, they all have their own timeline and characteristics....and behaviors.....for a while now we have been "SURE" that splash BLRW is a rooster.....now that one of the other BLRW (who was smaller and developed differently) is getting bigger.....we are less convinced the splash is a rooster....and these two are the same breed and the same exact age. You are comparing two different breeds. We are having a hard time playing the waiting game as well, but like I said, we are waiting until the bitter end! Good luck and here is to hoping your favorite chick is a pullet!

A good friend has been raising chickens for years. He had a pullet he was sure was a rooster. It walked taller, pecked at the other girls, was bigger, the one in charge, etc. He decided to wait until "he" started crowing to get rid of him. Then one day that "rooster" laid an egg.

. Might as well wait to see for sure.
