Everyone appeared happy and healthy yesterday afternoon. Everyone says my chickens look so healthy. My one-year old SLW laid an egg yesterday morning, there was a little poop on it (usually there's not). This morning the SLW is huddled up in a small spot outside and I pull her out and put her down and she just flops over, can't get her legs under her. She can hold her head up a bit though. She has some poop near her vent and all I can find is potentially egg bound although she laid an egg yesterday and wasn't in the next box and doesn't appear to be straining. But, she doesn't look good and it's the only thing I can think of so I give her the warm bath and then set her on a bed of straw inside. She's still a few seconds lying on her side, and then her leg thrashes out, I see her vent move a bit (maybe involuntary) and her neck curls around and she thrashes a few seconds and is dead. She went from what seemed to be amazingly healthy to dead in less 24 hours. What could have happened?

Oh my... Very sorry you lost her... If you have the stomach for it, cut her open and find out... You will at least know. Egg binding can be fatal. I have lost a few SLWs to repro problems. They were such beautiful girls and all were very young, with in their first year...

Thanks. She was stunning looking with her lacing. I'd like to know but don't think I have the stomach for the examination. I didn't feel an egg so she may not have been egg bound and from others' posts it seems like she should have been in the nest box straining and lasted longer. I sort of thought her eggs the last week were getting lighter/pinker shelled and maybe a bit thinner shelled (but still were solid and fine). Yesterday's egg was maybe a little smaller than normal, but close. I guess I really want to know, but not enough to cut her open.

I'm so so sorry! this scares me so badly! my heart just breaks for you! cant imagine what it could have been to take her so quickly. I'm so sorry. God bless and be with you. :"(
