I hatched a wyandotte mix chick 12 weeks ago and I thought it was a rooster from day 1.. however 12 weeks later it still hasn't got hackle feathers although the comb has gone red.
I've heard wyandottes are notoriously hard to sex and the hens combs go red sooner than other chooks.
My friend who is a chicken expert has just told me she thinks "Mr Roo" might actually be a hen! I'm now confused out of my mind and have no idea if it's a he or she. I'm planning on keeping it no matter what though.
He/she is still trying to fit into the flock and is nervous around the hens which seems more henish to me. However I've seen he/she peck and have a go at the dog which seems more like a rooster behaviour.
Let me know what you all think. I'm pretty stumped with this one because I was so sure it was a cockerel for the last 12 weeks!

Pullet. The comb and wattles are still small. Why did you think it was a cockerel from day one?
I thought it's comb looked bigger than other chicks and it went red/pink really quickly too but now I've heard the Wyandotte hens can go red sooner. But also, it's only 12 weeks and already it's feet and legs are much bigger than my adult hens

That's my thoughts & confusion ... Comb is pretty wide, leg are really thick .. Waiting to see what others with more expertise say.
