6 months ago while waiting for my online purchase of chicks I made the mistake of walking into Tractor Supply for some odds and ends needed for my soon arriving chicks. To my husbands dismay I passed by the live chicks for sale and purchased an assortment of bantams. Fast forward a couple months and 2 of them were clearly silkies. One was twice the size of the other and started to reveal much bigger wattles. So of course, I determined this one to be a “rooster”. Fast forward to the present. I am scratching my head. The bird I judged to be a rooster, is displaying some very strange behaviors for a rooster. For instance, when he/she stands by me and I lean down to pick it up, it will crouch down and brace itself to be mounted. It does this all the time. Also, I have various breeds of roosters and they all mount this strange silkie. Now when they do this, this silkie does not try to run, it just squats for the mount. I’m baffled. But I did purchase this bird at Tractor Supply so who knows what they put out to sell!! Lol! Also the single comb says it’s not a true silkie. I’m attaching picture of both silkies. The one with the single comb is the puzzle. I’m picturing them next to other birds for comparison.

Things like comb type and color vary so greatly in hatchery birds.

I would say that if its squatting to be bred, you have a pullet.

I haven't seen a Silkie with a single comb before. I like it.

So does size matter? I’ve heard here in the U.S. all silkies are considered bantams. Is this true? I’m new to the world of silkies. So the size of this silkie is throwing me off. It’s the size of my other standard chickens. The other smaller bantam silkie has the walnut comb and is rather small in comparison. I also heard in other countries the silkie comes in a standard and bantam sizes.... maybe this is the standard! Ha! I’m hoping this is a pullet!!🤞🏻
