I try to determine the square feet for my quail cages. I am not looking into raising quail for fertile eggs, but just to eat the eggs and quail.

1sq ft is the usual recommended minimum amount of space they need per bird. But larger cages can handle more birds per Sq ft while still giving them the same or even more room to roam around than a smaller cage at 1sq ft per bird.

If you're building small cages I would stick with the 1 sqft minimum. An all hen covey of quail should be pretty peaceful and wouldn't need quite as much room as you'd need with a bunch of males in the mix. Just keep an eye out and a pan hot for any troublemakers....
