I treated my three yearling peafowl for mites using ivermectin, ie., one treatment then follow up treatment. Neck feathers have not grown back (over a month now since treatment) and it looks like they have lost even more neck feathers. My daughter said they look like turkeys!

Should I treat them again with ivermectin? Or should I try a poultry powder with permethrin that I just bought at the feed store? I bought it to put in the roosting area but wonder if I should also dust the peafowl with it. Is it risky to use both on the birds? Advice anyone?

How much Ivermectin did you use?

You can use the Permethrin powder too. It will not be too much for the bird.

I highly recommend using some Permethrin spray in your coop. The spray gets in all the cracks much better than a powder can and be sure to retreat your coop too.

That should do it if it was the pour-on type. Are you actually seeing the lice or are you assuming by the overall appearance of the bird?

Actually it was not the pour on type. It was the 1 % that I gave orally by dipping small pieces of bread in it and feeding it to each of my yearling peafowl. I have not seen the mites (it is hard to get close enough to see them with my bad eyesight and difficult for me to catch them) but have observed them picking at their necks and they are losing their neck feathers. Do you think it could be something else going on?

Kathy says the injectable works for lice but I have not seen it working on my birds, I rely on the pour on giving 0.4ml divided on the skin in three places, between the shoulders, above the vent and a tiny drop behind the crest. My vet manual states there are no sucking lice on birds so it is difficult for me to understand how a louse is going to get the medication if it does not feed on the blood of the bird. I have also never seen a mite, only lice.

lol, yeah there is something else going on, molting. Right now the birds are losing their old feathers and the new ones are coming in. It is natural for the birds to scratch the keratin scales off from the new feathers as they grow in.

Hallelujah! That never even occurred to me. I guess they are just like chickens in that regard. However, I am surprised that the only place I see lost feathers are on their necks. I will calm down, wait and see if they continue molting...and will report back. Thanks for the info and giving me hope!
