What about a fish tank with some plexiglass on top? You can cut holes in the plexiglass if you need for ventilation, but you can control how many holes you have vs using chicken wire.

I made one out of a old metal bath tub, just made a door for the top, the hinge bolt to the lip, and drilled two holes on the ends for the lamps( slide them in, then put the bulb on) that way the can't knock them down so far it works great

The picture you posted is EXACTLY what the bird breeders use here for tiny baby birds!! I have seen them made and I think she made them for about 20.00, she used a cheap box from Walmart, a standard light bulb housing and light bulb, she never (to my knowledge even uses thermometers) BUT I guess with all the years experience she has she can look/feel and see how things are!

Thank! I'm going to put one together this weekend. Quickly as I am picking up my chicks on Friday,lol. I thinking of using a25 watt bulb. I can always go smaller if it's too much heat.

The litter box I have has a flap that I will have to put a latch on as I'm getting 3 new kittens as well!! Ok not kittens, year olds with special needs.
The box should be big enough for them until it warms up here enough to move them out to the coop. (finish building their coop, lol)
