As a Southerner who lived in New England (NH) let me warn you, as others are, be ready for the winter. As someone else pointed out, snow is only romantic for about a day. Then it becomes a real obstacle in your life (one small example...if you don't have a garage, you have to spend a few minutes every morning getting the snow off your car before work.) By the time the snow gets all mixed up with road-grit and mud, it is dark gray and ugly and the bane of your existence. They are also not kidding about the flies. Ouch.
New England is beautiful, but the winters are the price you pay. (And "winter could mean Nov. to March...)
(I have a theory that the entire real estate industry of New England is based on showing houses in October, when the foliage is gorgeous and there is no snow yet. It's what got us....!)
Not meaning to be negative, but do your research. Go visit in the winter. Really check it out.
Good luck, ayuh.
