I want a broody

If I was to get a hen to be my brooder what kind should I get? I have barred rock,golden sexlink,RIR,EE, and 2 EE Roos. I really want one to go broody but odds are against me. What breed would you all suggest? Thanks

Be carefull what you wish for! I've been whining for months that I want a broody and now I have four, possibly five. One of my EE's just hatched out 8 chicks and now her sister is looking like she might want to try. I have a black australorp sitting on 19 eggs she stashed and another BA sitting on shavings along with a Buff Orpington that is also on shavings in another nest box.

Silkies are supposed to be great broody moms, but they are small so can't cover too many eggs. I've heard cochins are great broodies too, but they have featherd feet (too much mud around here) so I went with Black Australorps and Buff Orpingtons for my broodies because they are large, docile, pretty, and are known as good broody breeds--they lay well when not brooding too. The EE's were a surprise, my kids wanted the colored eggs, but I didn't expect them to go broody.

A silkie!!! They lay for 2, maybe 3 weeks. Then go broody like clockwork. Of course they can't sit on as many standard sized eggs as they can a bantam egg.

Out of my breeds, only the Wyandotte has gone full-on broody. I have EE, BR, Wyandotte, Black Australorp. Of course, it's just their first year, the others may show broodiness in the future.

I've heard that bantams and silkies go broody fairly predictably.

You can have mine. I have a buff rock that refuses to be broken for long. Every other month or so, she's back on the empty nest. She's about to be Sunday dinner.

Be careful, I waited forever for one of mone to go broody, then after I ordered more chicks (12 more), she has gone broody, twice since February, and it looks like she is trying to do it again...

My Buff Orpington went broody. I thought they would not go broody with out a rooster. I have 10 fertile eggs under her. They are 20 to 5 days old and they are a mix breed. I have my fingers crosses that they will hatch it has been one week. She is a mean girl, if you look at her she puffs up and she will peck you if you get too close. I am excited about have her hatch some eggs.
