I want a turkey or two but.......

Hello,

Maybe some of you can help me. I would like to get a couple of turkeys. I prefer having a tom or two or a tom and a hen. I'm afraid the woman who is selling the turkeys only have females. They are young and would like to know if you can tell me if they are females. I guess I could get two females and get a tom later on. If that is the case the tom may not be the same breed as the girls. Just trying to figure out what to do. Any suggestions?

I hope not. I live in southeastern NC and the only turkeys that are advertised around here are the royal palms. I just love the sounds the toms make. Are the girls chatty at all? I heard the noises they make when they are scared. Interesting sound. I will have to build them a nice coop since it's pretty cold right now. I'm so excited. I can't wait to get them.​

Hens make 4 of 5 distinct noises that I've heard. The most common are:

Yelps are locating calls, sounds like a seal or sea lion barking, but higher. This will set off toms to gobble.

Cuts, sharp quick sounds, are calls they make when concerned, which is probably what you heard.

Beep-beep-beep is the sounds they make while milling about, or are on the roost. I think is keeps them together, not sure, or lets everyone know where everybody in the flock is.

They are very curious birds, and quite enjoyable to have around. Heritage birds can and will fly, and they'll get on top of everything, like cars, backhoes, airhockey tables in the shop, etc.

That's funny, we have a lot of Royal Palms here. I see them advertised on Craigslist during the summer months. I haven't seen much on the Blue Slate but I know they are around just not sure if they are around my area.

BTW, I did get the girls and they are now in there new temporary coop.

It's so darn cold I couldn't get a set up for them. For now they are in a dog pen that's about 8'x12' with plastic all around top and sides leaving the front part open. I put a larg wooden crate in there with a lot of hay. I also have a light on over the water so it doesn't freeze. It's going to be 16 tonight and probably windy. We are just not use to this kind of cold....... ugh.​
