I want to hatch my own meat bird. What rooster and hen to use?

I have been looking into hatching my own meat birds and I earlier mentioned Asils

that is still the way to go but with a little difference

The Cornish (Indian Game in UK) is crossed with a Rock to get the Cornish X

so a nice cross to combat leg issues and have a fast growing bird would be to try

Cornish (Indian Game) Male X Ixworth Hens

That's what im going to be trying

Indian Game for the double Breast and Ixworth for the Fast growing Dual Purpose Means

There are literary 100s of posts on this forum discussing this very topic there is a lot of great info and a lot of dreamers too but there is hours of reading out there just search "making your own meat birds" or something like that. This pic is a dark Cornish over a white rock. Commercial broilers are far more than that habits hens.

after reading all the posts in this thread I figure I will go with a dorking rooster and experiment on all my hens until I find something I like. Not sure what hens I will be buying when I get the rooster but white rock will be one of them. Wonder if dorking and leghorn will make a small fast maturing yet great tasting bird.

Leghorn??? You obviously need to do alot more research. Why on earth would you think a leghorn would make a good meat bird? Please read some threads and learn more about chickens.than your ideas may be a little more educated. Any chicken can be a meat bird, the trick is you just eat it. If you want a meatie chicken the a leghorn wouldn't even be considered. Do some research so your not just another dreamer, your a do'er.

Try it and see. One of the great things about chickens is most breeds produce lots of eggs so experimenting with crosses is not a huge commitment of time and resources. It is not like breeding horses or cattle, where if the cross is a bad one you may lose 1 - 2 years of the mother's productivity. And the best thing is that even if the cross does not turn out as as you hoped, they will still taste like chicken!

If you do try the Dorking/Leghorn cross I would love to hear how it turns out.
