I want to start quilting, tips?

I just want to suggest... since I'm new too....

Start small, and don't invest heavily until you decide from 1 or 2 small projects if you are going to keep going with the hobby!

One tip I'll give you is to use 100% cotton fabrics. They stretch less than blends and just handle better. I use only cotton in my quilts.

I agree with Jody's recommendation to enroll in a quilting class as an introduction. I went to a quilt shop's workshop called Quilting 101 where I was taken through all the steps from selecting fabric to binding with a group of other learners. Some others in class were beginners like I was, but there were experienced quilters there too who wanted to "review" basics. This let me share lots of "beginners" discussions, ask a jillion questions, get help when directions seemed unintelligible, and see a simple project through start to finish. We each ended up with a large sized throw quilt, and from there, I jumped into doing a set of quilts for my daughters, DIL, and mom. I recommend it. Have fun however you begin ~G

What supplies do you need if your doing it all by hand?

Quilting needles are different than regular sewing needles. They much shorter. They alsome come in different sizes. The higher the number the smaller the needle.

Thread is different. Use all cotton thread or "hand quilting thread".

Wax. You pull your thread across a wheel of wax. It helps the thread slip through the fabric and batting.

Also a frame of some kind helps. Whether it's a small hoop or a large floor frame to hold everything tight.

I think I have saved somewhere on my computer how to start quilting. I will see if I can find it. And like speckledhen said use 100% cotton and always wash and dry the fabric before you start anything this way there is less of a chance of it shrinking.
