When I was a student at Hiram College, I learned that Araucana chickens and I have something in common: albinism. Araucana chickens may come in two colors: tyrosinase negative (a true albino) or tyrosinase positive (a platinum). Tyrosinase is an amino acid that is necessary for the synthesis of melan for the production of pigment. A study has yet to be performed to determine which hue is dominant. I was interested in that result because I am a tyrosinase positive platinum which is much more rare than an albino. (1 :1,500 albinos or 1: 2,250,00 people worldwide are born platinum). The chickens became so comfortable with my company that some of my hens would lay their eggs in my lap.
