Today I had the day off of school and work, so I spent the day working around and renovating the chicken coop and pen. It started off with just enforcing some fencing for the fall, but it spiralled into a late day of enjoyable work.

I soon found myself yanking out everything in the coop (bedding, feeders, waterers, hay, buckets) and dragging my dads heavy duty work vaccum into the coop with a huge extension cord (Dont tell dad...

). Then I vaccumed a plethura of bugs, cobwebs, dust, dried poo and other unwanted particles before dumping the evidence and resotring my dads vaccum back into the garage.

Then I decided I wanted to paint, so I carried my dad's Sherwin Williams White Exterior paint can into the pen and repainted the trimmings of the coop. Hurrying before my parents came home, I accidently flung white paint in a multitude of places such as little shrubs and a woodpile nearby.

After that, I decided that the hens needed a new roost in the coop. The old one was sagging. I removed the old one and threw it in the "to be burned" bonfire pile. I grabbed a nice screwgun I found (shh, also my dad's

), and got to work installing the new one. When that was finished, I put a nice new layer of bedding down and restored the buckets and feeders on top of the shelf after some dusting. The coop was spotless.

Next it was onto some exterior renovation to add to the newly painted trim. I ran into the kitchen and grabbed my mom's basil and chive plants from the window (she doesn't use them anyhow) and I planted them nicely beside the coop in front of some mossy ancient bricks which make up the foundation of the coop. Stick a homemade scarecrow in there and the work was done.

I grabbed myself a chair and a book and sat with the hens the rest of the day. It was nice to have a break form everything, forget that I had tons of homework to do, and work on such a great hobby. I might make it a sunday tradtition.

I was just thinking, next sunday I might relocate a grape vine we have to crawl up the side of the coops chain link fence. And plant some fall mums and shrubbery around the coop beside the woodpile.
And on the inside, hang up an awesome picture of the chickens in an old cheap wooden frame from TSC.

Now im on a roll.

You've inspired me! But the weekend is over and it's back to work in the morning.

I do plan to fling open the coop doors next weekend and air everything out really well while I work on winterinzing things. Also I'm going to fire up the tiller and give the run a thorough turning while everyone is out in the yard free-ranging.

Sounds like a great coop! Do you have chickens?

I'm always telling my DBF Jack that "these two dark red ones are not just any chicken - they are the 'State Bird of Rhode Island'", and I try to say it like it's important - so I am quite pleased to see your avatar!
