I was thinking...production bred birds=new breed?

I was going through some old pics from shows and came across a bird that was entered as a black orp but the judge said it was a black australorp. That got me to thinking, black australorps are just production bred black orps right? Well since they are wouldnt that make other production strains their own breed? Looking at production RIR's and good RIR's is like comparing BA's with black orps.
I brought this up because a friend was dissapointed in the hatchery RIR's, they thought that they would be like the "pure" RIR's.

Whats everyone else's thoughts on this?

I do not know about the Orps and Australorps but in my opinion I agree with you, the RIR and the Production Reds are 2 different chickens. Production reds do not conform to the RIR standard so technically they are not RIR. Right?

Delawares are another breed created from sexlinks.. although apparently it was a result of one rooster being exceptional/quite different from the sexlink from that sort of cross..

The problem is, it is almost impossible to create an animal that achieves both goals- show winner AND production. The reasons are very varied, in some cases traits desired for show can have negative effect on production or vice versa for example.. and then there's the fact that the more specific genes is desired to be in the same animal, the considerably higher the challenge it is to hit on them and then to breed them to consistently produce in two very different goals.

It doesn't help for production goals when the show standard calls for birds with rather extreme body types- this is happening even in breeds with a dual purpose history.

IMO for this reason it would work very well if a breed were segregated into 'Production' & 'Show' with better understanding why these birds look rather different. Otherwise this problem potentially could just go on- it could be possible for Australorps to fall into the same problem, the show winners start to look radically different from production bred Australorps.. same cycle repeating itself.
