Okay, so I know I should have been better prepared...but I really didn't think the eggs I put in the incubator would hatch...(my hens are young, and so is my roo). Well, guess what? I know you'll all laugh, but last nite while at my computer, I kept hearing a "bird" and then again this am...looking out our windows I thought there may be a nest somewhere close by...I ck my eggs (sitting in the incubator on my kitchen counter!) a couple times a day...but nothing....So...about an hour ago, I'm talking to my husband, telling him I'm going to look around the outside of the house for a nest...and I just happen to look down into the incubator...and guess what?! I have a baby chick almost out of its shell! and another one working on its shell! Oh, my!
So, not knowing I wasn't supposed to do this...I "help" the 1st one out of it's shell...because the membrane seems pretty dry...anyway, I put paper towels down...and it scoots around the incubator...
Questions: 1) it has some poo & a bit of a real red "cord" coming from it's behind...will that drop off?
2) How long till it stands up? it's scooting now...is that normal?
3) the other eggs get rolled around when the chick moves...should I do anything?

Thanks for ANY ADVICE!!!

They will 'scoot' around for a few hours. The red behind should go away after a while. That is just where the yokl sac was absorbed. If it doesn't heal, keep him seperated until it does. Nice suprise!!! Young birds will be fertile. If they are laying and a roo is around, you WILL have fertile eggs! Congratulations! Oh, and the other eggs moving/rolling around...you can't do much about that. Good luck with the rest of them!!!!!!

1) it has some poo & a bit of a real red "cord" coming from it's behind...will that drop off? It will, just watch it as cindiloohoo said.
2) How long till it stands up? it's scooting now...is that normal? It will scoot for quite a while - even after you take it out of the bater. If you think about it there's not much room for movement in the bator anyway.
3) the other eggs get rolled around when the chick moves...should I do anything? Nope. Only interviene if one pips, zips and seems to be stuck to the membrane.

You mentioned you helped the first hatch because the membrane seemed dry. You might want to mist the remaining eggs quickly with warm water. Don't open the bator up all the way or all the humidity you have in there will be lost, but open it up just a crack and spray the warm water in. A few squirts might help the ones that are having a hard time because of a hard shell.

The other option is if you have holes on the top of the bator you can also pour water down a straw and aim for the water trays (assuming you have a set up like that).

CONGRATULATIONS!
