I will never again think that turkeys are stupid animals!

I have four 5-week old Blue Slate and Bourbon Red poults in a brooder inside my bathroom. I brought them home from the feed store when they were about 1 week old and they almost immediately flew out of the brooder. Hmmm... my chickens never did that. Luckily, I had some bird netting on hand and was able to cover the top of the brooder.

Over the course of the past month, the turkeys have managed to escape multiple times. I've watched them work together to yank the netting free and fly out. Before I figured out what they were doing, I found droppings in random places in the bathroom. They had escaped, had some fun out and about, and then flew back into the brooder!

These are NOT dumb birds. They have earned my respect, but I am looking forward to moving them out this weekend.

I'm sorry... that image just really made me laugh!

I want to add that if the bird netting is the thin stuff that they sell to keep birds from eating your fruit, please be careful. If they try to eat it, it can kill them.

Laugh away! They are funny little (well, not so little) things. When all four escape, they traipse down the hall and taunt my daughter's pet rabbits. Cracks me up every time until I have to remove their droppings from the carpet!

The netting is that kind of bird netting. It's in a very large piece and they haven't ripped off any of it yet, but I'll keep an eye out. They won't have to deal with it much longer anyway since they will be moving to their outdoor accommodations this weekend.
