I will never......

Ain't it the truth? How many of us have more than one child? And what did we say after the birth of the first child? "NEVER AGAIN."

I can relate. I decided after hatching chickens on Christmas 2009, that 2 months in the garage was WAY too long! I told my husband I would limit this batch arriving March 9th to a month, then it would be out to the grower coop with a heat lamp.

I can truly relate!!! I hatched out 19 chicks Jan 23rd and the weather just has not let up long enough to get the coop revamped, plus I just got 13 chicks 7 days old , all girls, so I have a total mess in one room!!!! I do admit I enjoy grabing my coffee in the morning, stepping into the brooder and having my 6 week olds all crawl in my lap and peep and purr, I am sure I am what most people envision when they say "redneck". I have one little EE that goes into a total panic when I leave the room, I don;t think she realizes she is a chicken lol

Nope, not me. I will not get more chicks or any eggs until the weather is warm and they can brood outside. I just can't take the smell and mess of them. I did it once and NEVER AGAIN!

We love our little chickies! Our country kitchen is just the right place to keep a close eye on our 25 cuties and warm enough during this very cold winter (many days at 5-17 degrees). . . .my kids love to visit with them as much as I do!

For the chicks moving to the garage, would you consider a tent of sorts? A simple frame covered with old sheets can reduce the space to keep warm, providing a more consistent temperature, and more importantly protect the chicks from chills and drafts when doors are opened. I'm assuming the garage will still be used for the car(s). Just a thought. Hope you enjoy them as much as we are!

Once they are 2 weeks old, I take the bottom of a milk jug(cut along the line that runs completely around the jug) and fill it half way with sand. I place this in their brooder tub and let them use it for dusting. I also use shredded paper as their bedding/litter. The whole thing cleans easily enough, and has less stink.
