I will take your Roos/ Ohio

Not always. I'd like to think higher of some people. We have a man not too far from us who will take unwanted poultry-regardless of gender-and free range them on his farm. It helps keep the bug population low. He doesn't feed them himself, as they are ttal free range birds literally living off of the land, but treats them very well. I am lucky that some people are willing to be that kind.

However, unless you can check this guy's house every day to make certain your roos are okay, you really don't know if this is true. I like to think people better than this.

some of us raise poultry to eat and that doesnt make us bad people. i'm not sure why you'd think badly of him either.... just dont kid yourself that he's going to bring them in the house and snuggle them every nite. once you drop off a critter you loose jurisdiction over them. best to go into it with your eyes open.

I've given a few free roosters away recently on craigslist If you list them for free you can get quite a few responses. 2 went to a chicken farmer who lets a few roos free range around the property - and I guess he loses a few that way. Other want to someone whos roo has just been run over. Saying that, another lady offered to take them and later I found out they were for her dogs raw meat diet!

Let me rephrase that: I'd like to think people better of people than those who promise a good home and end up going against their word. I know people will eat roosters. I'm totally fine with that. I eat chicken. And, yes, it is always a risk when this is someone you don't know. You'd just be taking their word for it. I DO have my eyes open. There are people out there, though in small numbers, that will take on the task, with eager feelings, of keeping unwanted birds. It isn't simply that they are going in the freezer.

Keep an open mind. I'm fully aware that they aren't going to baby my birds.

I never said that. I think that you read a bit too deeply into my post. I know people who will do such things and have seen my birds healthy and happy, years later.

thanks for the clarification, ThePolishPrincess, and sorry if i was all 'waa waa waa'.... we live WAY out and lots of folks think that they can just drop their animals off at the end of our drive and they'll go and live on that lovely farm forever..... so i have a hefty dose of 'what do you think is going to happen' wrapped in snarkiness for 'he's going to go and live on a farm!' stories...
:-(

but on the lighter side - sometimes these things do work out

i rehomed a really charming little roo to a woman who really DOES snuggle him everynite - and i have the pix to prove it!

she lost her beloved roo of 7 years and was completely heartbroken. we had this funny little roo who was destined for the pot - which would have been a shame b/c he really was beautiful. so it worked out perfectly. she sends me funny pix and emails about his antics and i'm glad i found a new friend...and he avoided being the star of our next chicken n dumplins!

now if anyone has any MEAT roosters they'd love to drop off..come on over! or a beef cow. or a goat in milk who just freshened... or a couple more feeder pigs. but please not cats - we are at maximum cat-pasity.

:)

Actually, what would work awesome is if I could find someone to "roo-sit" the two I have for about 5weeks!

I have a CW event at the end of that time and I know of some soldiers who'd love a good chicken meal! I'm not opposed to eating the roos myself, but I live in town and don't care much for preparing chicken. Beef, turkey, lamb, etc... all those meats I can handle. But chicken? It's just too slimy or something for me. Ugh.

I can eat it when it's all done and cooked... but touching it raw? *sighs* And I grew up on a farm with lots of chickens. I even plucked my favorite rooster before my mum cooked him up. Of course, he had suddenly become "Big Daddy Mac" and turned on me. So plucking him was a sort of revenge!

Anywho... Any roo-sitters out there interested? Only thing is, you can't get too attached to the guys, as they'll be "raided" from my "farm" at the event and eaten, probably that very night! (We need a shocked smiley or something here!)
