My flock is free range and are cooped at night, but some times my little bird brains forget this.

Like, last night.

A shut the gate at 8:00pm and notice two of my flock are missing, teenage pullets Scallop (BR) and Black Bird (Jersey Giant). I search everywhere and do not find them, figure something took them.

At 11:00pm I hear a chicken clucking (not scared clucking) outside my bedroom window. I go out and see Black Bird scratching away happily at the dirt.

So I go out and attempt to get her into the coop. She then takes off running into the woods and so I again, think I'm down two chickens.

At 12:15 I let the dogs out into the backyard and hear a happily clucking chicken. Look over and there is Scallop, watching the dogs. Luckily I am able to get her into the coop. Black Bird survives the night and I find her staring into the coop with a confused look on her face.
"Was I supposed to do something, George? Was I?"

I have two roosters and three hens that refuse to coop up at night and instead spend the sleeping hours 15 feet up in a tree every evening.
