I wonder how chickens used to lay eggs fine without a healthy diet..?

I imagine that they were. I honestly cannot remember seeing any though. I remember being pecked reaching under a broody so we could candle her eggs. Watching the chicks following hens and chasing each other trying to steal a bug one had found. I remember going in the coop after dark and putting roosters in crates. So I know they all ran together. So a number of the hens probably would of had to have naked heads and backs.

They had about 40 or so chickens total. With about 20 or so being hens.

It was a mix. There were quite a few roosters.
