so that's what i'm wondering.

i want some standard sized potential broodies, and thought of BO and cochins

the heavy feathering of the cochins concerns me a bit, as they could poss. smother chicks...........

My favorite broodies were my Ideal Kraienkoppes. They look a lot like a brown Leghorn, sleek, no feathered legs. But I doubt smothering would be a problem as they are frequently used as broodies.

There are a bunch of DP breeds that tend to go broody. Check Henderson's.

My bantam Cochins are much better broodies and mothers than my standard size. I did have a LF Cochin that would constantly step on the newly hatched chicks and kill them. She did not mean to and looked sad about it but I did not let her hatch any more. My others were fine with them but not nearly as good as my bantam Cochins.
And hatchery stock is just as broody as breeder stock, from my experience. I have both in Cochins and Silkies.

I got a couple of White Rocks from Ideal that are great broodies. Beautifully tempered girls as well.

My black cochin, Cleo, hatched several broods, and they all survived. She didn't kill any of them! BTW, she is a standard cochin. She's broody ALL THE TIME!!!!
