I had half a water melon in the frige, DH didn't want any, so I cut it up into chunks and took it out to the chickens. WOW WAS THAT A BIG HIT. It's 104 here today, no breeze, got the fan on in the coop, with plenty of water available, but they sure perked up when I took the watermelon in.

We are supposed to cool off tonight, then be in the lower 90s for the rest of the week. Hooray.

Mine have gone through two melons and a cantalope in the past couple of days. I've got about 75 chicks and they were funny as heck, climbing into the melon half to get to the good stuff. Looked like a bunch of sharks in a feeding frenzy!

Topped 100 again today, but should be cloudier tomorrow, with 20-30% chance of rain. The local weatherman is claiming a 50% or higher chance this weekend. I sure hope so, because the chickens are miserable, I barely leave the house between 9 and 6, and the pond is shrinking and getting stagnant.

They say it's the hottest, driest summer here in 30 years, and I believe it!

Mine love it as much as I do! I took half a watermelon to the feed store where they sell chicks and chickens and put it in the run and those chickens just went crazy. I feel bad for them, all they have is a dirt run and tepid water to drink on these hot, hot days. I felt they deserved a little treat.

We feed our chickens anything (fruits/vegetables/leftovers-except meat products) since day 1, it's like watching a tackle in a football game when I put it down in front of them. They all group together to grab what they can, one will have a treat and take off to the 50 yard line so the other chickens don't steal it. It's hilarious!
