I just found this snake alive with all the chickens around it. so I killed it . Sorry snake livers but I have babys just born today. Can the chickens eat it. And most off all what kind is it? Heart pounding, never killed a snake before.

I think the belly was a little green. A green snake, chicken snake garden snake?

Looks like a garter snake. Non-poisonous and too small to eat even a chick, I would think. They eat bugs, frogs, stuff like that. We have those and black racers in our yard. If you hadn't killed it, your hens might have eventually.

I understand the panic! Now that it's gone, do a search for Snakes of TN- get to know their appearances, so next time you'll know a good snake versus a bad snake.

I am NOT a snake lover, (or liver,

) but I had to learn because we live in the sticks. It allowed me to tell the difference between snakes- I let the "good" snakes go with a scolding- the bad snakes? D-E-A-D.

So far, 1 rattler, 1 copperhead.

I keep a shovel by the chicken pens, but usually I just shove the good ones away. Good luck, pretty brave to kill one! Most people scream and run!

I was just thinking about my chickens . What if they get bite? It was going to bite someone and all the chickens were very close to it. I don't think I'll feed it to the chickens after all.

To me, any snake is a bad snake. They all acare the daylights out of me. I see one it dies. Then I get DH to identify it. Kinda like shoot first ask questions later.

hey gamblergirl,
don't feel bad, my 285# husband calls me to kill the snakes, good or bad!!! LOL
of course I call him to kill the spiders, so we are even !

Being out in the sticks, I have had to learn, from the pics online- it isn't easy, but I just had to "cowgirl" up.

One day, not too long ago, I was out by the pens and saw a 6' yellow rat snake crawl throught the chain link- and watched also while the hens just stepped OVER it!

The hens didn't care- I finally recovered!
