Got one that I can't identify, hopefully someone can. Please keep it nice- we are a certified wildlife habitat, so I have to tread carefully. (let's not mention that murderous possum I shot last year.....)

Okay, this critter was here last spring and moved on after a month or so. Danged if it or it's cousin hasn't come back this year.

We are about 20 miles inland from the ocean in SC. Heavily wooded but not swampy.

It usually shows up soon after dark, almost always 20-25' beyond the back fence, which is a heavily wooded area. All we've heard is a barking cough kind of sound. Almost more like a cat's rowr, but not quite. No hissing or spitting. I have an 80+ lb. Lab who goes into a frenzy when he hears it, but the critter doesn't leave when the dog starts, it answers each bark with another medium pitch "rowr". Matches him one for one, sometimes for hours. Oh joy.

I have taken a powerful flashlight out but have yet to spot it. There are times when I think it may be in a tree, but not very high up. In 7 years we've seen one raccoon out here and it was dead in the road. Numerous deer, one possum who had to be shot in the coop. Zillions of snakes. I have heard of foxes and coyotes from other folks, but never actually seen any evidence.

I have the trap set from TSC, thinking of baiting the larger one with cat food to see what I get. But those traps are not at all coon strength.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

Bobcats can make strange and eerie sounds but not like you are describing. Fox and 'coon don't make sounds unless provoked or struck. The only times I've heard fox make a sound is when they've been shot. (Seriously)

Think you have a wombat

If your budget allows, trail cameras are too much fun. I've had this one for 3.5 years now and it is awesome.

Whoooooa doggie! After listening to all the links, it's just about 100% fox. Drove both dogs nuts, I had the speakers cranked up, lol. Dang near lost them to the Lab, he thought he'd eat the fox via the speakers.

Thank you for all the information. I really hadn't considered foxes, never even laid eyes on one though I have heard they're around. Pretty tough little critter or just brazen- he probably knows the Lab can't get to him!

Plan is to leave it be, unless it goes after the chickens or ducks. I suspect it is breeding season or it has a den on the property behind us. If it minds it's business, no problem. It it comes after my birds? Dead. I hope I can let it live, maybe even get some pics to study it a bit. My pens/coops are pretty secure, but never say never!

Thank you!
