Ideal peroid of light for chicks?

Hi all,
I'm planning on putting some lights in my brooder, its a little dark in there for my liking as they get very little natural light from outside. So I thought while I was at it I would like to put them on a timer, so just want to know how much light the chicks should get per day?

I leave my light on 24/7 because they need the heat.

Mine have a separate ceramic heat lamp, the light will be purely to brighten the brooder so to save power would like to have it off at night

If they don't need it for the heat then whatever your natural daylight length outside is would be good. That's what they are going to be living in when they come out of their brooder.
