I have lost 3 out of my order of 27. I think it depends less on the hatchery, and more on how well the chicks were shipped. Ours were shipped on a pretty cold day, and I think that accounts for at least some of the losses.
I ordered 8 chicks from ideal... one that turned out to be my second Red Leghorn died in transit but all the others are great, including my 16 packing peanuts. I use organic non-medicated feed, and no vaccines, no problems... a slight bit of pasty in 2 of them the first 3 days, but that was it. They are all happy and extremely healthy...
My chicks are now a few weeks old. maybe 4 weeks old now. I do not give layer rations. I give very expensive flock grower/raiser for the ducks and the medicaded chick starter to the chicks. The ducks I would ration there water, I didn't constantly refill. When I hatched my own ducks I never lost any. I lost one gosling for unknown reasons. I had 3 dead in the package when it came. (all my silkies and old english I ordered have died) I lost 5 within the first day. By 24 hours I lost a couple more. They did credit me those one's back. But everyday there after it seems I have lost one or two. It breaks my heart and I hate it.
It also gets rather expensive when you loose that many! Sorry for the losses.
My Ideal babies are about 4 weeks now. I lost 1 bantam cochin & duckling right away, 1 packing peanut within 3 days & now I have 2 that are not well. Not sure if they are sick or the young flock just wasn't letting them eat?? Other than that, All my Silkies are fine (12) the other bantam Cochins are fine (11), 2 ducklings & the layer grils & roos are ok too.
but I did notice that the weak ones are the ones that died.
I'm new but i just got my second batch of chicks from Ideal and i think they are great. I did go pick up my second order to prevent them from being shipped. I think that has a lot to do with the problem. Good Luck and i would suggest giving them another try in better shipping weather.
