The coop I built a few months ago has a covered built in run, by its only 8x4 which isn't really big enough for my 5 hens, who I have to keep them in there most the day due to many predators in my area. So I want to build an 8x4 addition on to it that's not going to be covered. I pretty much have the framing well planned out, 2x4s are relatively inexpensive, but I'm concerned about what to use as a substitution to hardware cloth which I used for my built in run. It would cost around $100 for hardware cloth alone in this addition. I wàs thinking about chicken wire but I heard that's almost useless if a predator comes along. This is only a day time thing by the way too, the chickens get locked up in the coop at night. So any ideas or suggestions?

2 x 4 fencing wire with chicken wire on the inside about 2 inches in will prevent tearing into the run. The chicken wire will impede reaching through, so that the chicken will have time to respond to the attack. At least that is the philosophy.
