1/2" is perfect. No need for 1/4. My coop and run is wrapped with it and it has deterred everything from foxes to raccoons to bobcats.

Mine is 19 gauge, though. Does the 23 gauge feel flimsy to you?

The reason I’m questioning it is that I noticed a small area where there was breakage over 6 or 7 of the squares. I don’t know if it happened when it was installed, or if a predictor did it.

But yes, now that I’m realizing this, it does seem kind of flimsy.

I used 1/2 inch hardware cloth on my chicken run but I also put dog proof raccoon paw traps baited with marshmallow and peanut butter around the perimeter of the chicken run. I have not lost chickens to predators so far this year. This week alone I trapped and shot 5 raccoons.
