Thank you all for the replies. My chicks came in at 5 this morning and are set up in the storage shed right now. I am on board with what Ridgerunner is saying. The chickens will be completely separate from the kids playing area and the kids are supervised while outside. I think keeping a rooster or two might be in my best interest. Another question is should I have two separate coops? If egg and meat production differences will be minimal even with cross breeds, will RIR more aggressive nature be too much for BO's timid nature. I want them to be happy, productive chickens so would I be better off with two coops vs one coop? And if they are going to intermix anyways does two coops even matter? Just wondering, right now they are all together in the "brooder". I do plan on having a good predator proof coop, should I also have a run? I want to free range as much as possible but if we have to leave for T-ball practice or something and know we won't be back before dark how hard is it to round them up? That way they could still be outside if we were going to be gone for the day but would minimize chances of a hawk/owl/fox of scooping up a easy meal.
Need to get started on the coop cause I know the brooder will only hold them for so long, just trying to get an idea of a ideal setup. Thank you all
