Ideas needed, egg eating broody......

Fred's Hens :

Protein= check
Calcium= check

Honestly? You've got egg eating birds. I'd start over quickly. cull.

Thanks Fred. I know this is headed in that direction. I don`t hesitate to cull because I`m squimish about it, I`ve been culling hard all my life, but these fowl are hard to come by and from excellent bloodlines. I would just like to find a remedy, if possible......Pop

Oh my gosh...I had 2 egg-eating hens, one was a white leghorn and the other was a red sexlink. I set them up one day as I was getting NO eggs and the nests were a mess. I tried the Calcium and Vitamins, the golf balls and everything else that I heard about. No GO. I stood and watched after putting eggs in a nest box, and like you said, they DOVE into the box for them. One I was able to rehome to a guy on a farm and the other was Sunday dinner. Since then, I have been getting a dozen a day..

I know how you feel about your special birds and hope you do find a rememdy!! let us all know and best of luck :)

I can say for sure that peepes don't work for this particular problem -- I've got them on my girls, and I'm fighting egg eaters at the moment. Peepers are going for things that require fine control (grabbing feathers), but eggs are a big target!

do you eat eggs? If so save the shells let them DRY. place shells in a blender and blend away. Now you can feed it to your chickens. good source of Calcium
might stop her from eating eggs if you fry her up

Good bloodlines does not always equal a quality bird.. I would name one of them gumbo, the other fricassee and then have them "over for supper."

I agree completely and it probably will come to that, but at the same time, eating eggs does not mean they aren`t quality birds. Quite the contrary in this case, not only quality, but rare, which is why I am making an effort to salvage them. I may end up obtaining other hens to hatch their eggs, if the rollout nest works out. I used an incubator years ago, but have since come to prefer hen hatching. My old cock is getting long of tooth and is a superb specimen of a bloodline that needs to be preserved. Any others with opinions would be welcome.........Pop
