Ideas on Discouraging Neighbor Dogs

add my name to the list of those recommending an electric fence. If the neighbors dogs can casually invite themselves into the company of your fowl, so can everything else.

...and yes, have a neighborly chat with the dog's owner.

Assume they are unaware of their dogs' travels, being combative or accusatory (and I know how hard it can be to avoid this, particularly if the neighbor gets emotional/defensive) won't help the situation as a first meeting.

I like the electric fence idea ! I use one all around my garden to keep the critters out ! Dogs are only as smart as their owners . With that said I hope you come to a solution . Good Luck 🍀

Actually not, a fence that can deter wild animals couldt still be ripped to shreads by a large dog, just sayin'.

There isn't a dog on the planet that could take my electric fence apart. Dig under it, sure, or even force its way, painfully, between the wires - but dogs lack the mass to take it apart. I built it to deter feral hog.

I was not referring you your fence but the OP's.
Apologies, i misunderstood. My fence has already deterred the neighbor's hog hunting dogs (its their company business, actually), I get a little defensive about overbuilding sometimes.

The local turkey just fly right over it, of course.

After I secured Blue, I ran down to the neighbors house (after a trip inside for my emergency inhaler!) and after several very loud "Hello"'s she came outside. I was still struggling to breath so I only said "your dogs are attacking my chickens" and then headed back. She went to get her car keys and pulled into the driveway. She was very apologetic and asked if my birds were OK and if there was anything that she could do. She was mad at the dogs and I told her that they were just being dogs and that most dogs that have not been trained around poultry will want to attack or play with a flapping and squaking bird. I know some people don't want to accept responsibility for things like this but it was her fault, not the dogs. I was trying to get that point across but I believe she was too frazzled. They have their back yard fenced in but I believe they keep digging out. I'm looking into electric fencing and reading the shared information now. I didn't even think about running a wire around the pond. Thank you so much for that suggestion! I'd love for my ducks to be able to free range again. Now I just have to figure out how to get rid of those thorn bushes/briars without any ill effects to the fish! Thank you all so much for the replies.

Occasionally when there is a power outage 2 dogs will show up at our place. I have no idea where they come from but I think their electric fence goes out and they have a field trip day.

My nearest neighbor in the direction they come from has no idea either. He is almost a mile away.

Anyway, these 2 very well fed labs will come tight to you. So we bought dog chains in case we ever have to catch them and tie them up then try to find the owners. You can tell they are clueless. They will run right down the middle of the ST RT we live off of.

The one time they did show interest in the chickens that were out my husband was prepared with pepper spray and a shotgun, hoping not to have to use either in any lethal way. As one dog was closing in on a hen he fired off a couple of shots (not at the dogs) and they took off back the way they came.

It sounds like your neighbor will try to help fix the problem so that's good.

If your water hose doesn't reach what about a big super soaker water gun?

Many years ago a BYC member had issues with a dog. The dog's owner claimed it wasn't his dog coming on her property so the next time it showed up she shot it with a paintball. Not sure what happened. I'm not advocating shooting dogs with a paintball.
I think a paint ball in a little sling shot would be enough to mark the dog without hurting it. And had that dog been shot dead, would it suddenly be theirs then?
