My roommate has had chickens for years. They mostly have consisted of a mixed flock of Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds and occasionally Buff Orpintons. Their flock has dwindled to two older hens a Rhodie and a Leghorn. My roommate never culls her flock, doesn't have a roster, and let's the girls live out their lives until old age takes them. She is getting older and decided that once these two girls go she'd be done. Recently my son came to me wanting to help a friend out. His friend had 2 hens that were going to be seized because their HOA found out about them. My roommate allowed me to take them in and use the spare coop we have that has been empty for over a year.

The friend who had the hens didn't know the breeds. She got them at different times from 2 different feed stores last year. Can anyone help me out? I'm pretty sure one of them is a silver laced wyandotte. Not sure about the other. I've attached pics of them. The dark one is Luna and the white one is Kendall. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help, I was pretty sure about Kendall being a silver laced Wyandotte. I was leaning more towards a black copper maran for Luna, I hadn't considered a black sex-link. She definitely resembles that more than a maran. I've only had them a week and they are definitely characters. Luna thinks she's a house pet and Kendall chats up a storm whenever i come around. I didn't think either of them would start laying for awhile from the stress of the move but Luna is already providing breakfast. From what i understand, Kendall had never layed an egg. She's almost a year old, so that kind of worries me, but we'll see.

You're Welcome.

Kendall is a silver laced wyandotte. Luna is more than likely the black sex link the others mentioned. My first thought was marans too, but I couldnt see her legs very well. The egg she is laying should tell the tale. Is it really dark brown like chocolate or just brown? Lighter brown would be that black sex link. Chocolate eggs, marans.

The one egg I've gotten so far is very light brown almost peach. I'm thinking it's hers because the people who had them before said that the white one never laid. So i agree, she's more than likely black sex link. She also didn't have the gathering on her feet/legs like a maran does. I'm having to relearn a lot of things. I showed old English game hens in high school with DR A and used to know a lot of breeds and such but it's been quite some time so it's slowly coming back to me. Thanks for the info I've attached a pic of the egg i got today just to see if we are correct in thinking it came from the "sex link".
